Trump Delays Bipartisan Housing Bill Signing

President Donald Trump canceled a scheduled signing ceremony for a bipartisan housing bill on Wednesday, linking the measure to a Republican election package. The decision delayed legislation that Congress had passed with wide support to expand housing supply and reduce pressure on buyers.

Trump announced the cancellation of today’s Housing News Conference and Signing shortly before the planned Capitol event, writing on Truth Social: “Today’s Housing News Conference and Signing is hereby cancelled until such time as we pass the desperately needed SAVE AMERICA ACT.” He also called the election bill a “National Emergency.”

Congress had moved the Trump housing bill quickly through both chambers. The House approved it on Tuesday by a 358-32 vote, while the Senate passed it Monday by 85-5. Such margins remain rare in a divided Congress, especially on domestic legislation tied to affordability.

The Trump housing bill delay created uncertainty over a package that Republican and Democratic leaders had promoted as a response to rising housing costs. House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune had both welcomed its passage before the White House changed course.

Measure Targets Supply and Investor Ownership

The Trump housing bill seeks to speed construction by easing or accelerating environmental reviews for certain housing projects. It also aims to expand affordable housing availability in areas facing deep shortages.

Another provision would cap how many already built single-family homes large Wall Street investors can own. Lawmakers added that measure as concerns grow over institutional ownership in residential markets.

The Trump housing bill debate comes as many Americans struggle with high mortgage rates, elevated home prices, and limited supply. Housing groups estimate that the United States lacks millions of affordable homes.

SAVE America Act Blocks Signing

Trump tied the signing to the SAVE America Act, which would add proof-of-citizenship and voter ID requirements across federal elections. Noncitizen voting in federal races remains illegal, and reported cases remain rare.

The House passed the SAVE America Act earlier this year. However, Senate Republicans do not have the 60 votes needed to overcome the filibuster without Democratic support.

The Trump housing bill decision may increase friction between the White House and Senate Republicans. Trump still planned to meet Republican senators at the Capitol on Wednesday, where the SAVE America Act was expected to remain central. The delay also left lawmakers waiting for a clear next step publicly.
