dLocal and Western Union expand partnership in Africa to add remittance payouts, starting in Cameroon

dLocal and Western Union said they are expanding their partnership in Africa to include remittance payouts, building on the payments and collections work they already conduct together.
The companies said the payout expansion will begin with a live payout corridor in Cameroon. They described the model as separating technology and connectivity from execution, with dLocal providing the technology and connectivity layer and regulated local partners handling the payout services under applicable local regulatory frameworks, including through “MNOs or financial institutions,” as stated in the release.
How the payout expansion works, per the announcement
In Cameroon, the companies said recipients will be able to receive remittances directly into supported local wallets via local payout partners. dLocal and Western Union said this aims to address what they characterized as a gap in reliable recipient options, noting that Cameroon is “fragmented” and wallet-based.
The release said the expansion is intended to create a single end-to-end path from “send to receipt,” adding reliability to the receiving side of remittances as senders already expect on the outbound journey.
Company quotes
Western Union said the expansion supports its focus on reliable disbursement. In the release, Mohamed Touhami El Ouazzani, Regional Vice President and Head of Africa at Western Union, said: “Extending our work with dLocal into payouts means we can offer that same reliability on the disbursement side too, starting in markets like Cameroon.”
For dLocal, Agustin Botta, Head of EMEA at dLocal, said the companies are addressing what he described as a separation between collections and payouts. He said: “With Western Union, we're working together to close that gap, building a more consistent path from send to receipt.”
Planned expansion beyond Cameroon
Beyond Cameroon, the companies said they are exploring adding the payout expansion to other African markets, including Nigeria. The release referenced potential payment methods such as bank transfers and wallets as part of an effort to cover more of the remittance journey across emerging markets.
The announcement also cited external data. It stated that the World Bank estimated remittance flows into Sub-Saharan Africa reached roughly US$57 billion in 2024. The companies framed this as a reminder of the significance of remittances to households in the region.
What the companies said about future plans
dLocal and Western Union characterized their rollout as a step-by-step expansion of digital remittance corridors. The release included forward-looking language, saying that future expansion to additional markets and payment methods depends on risks and uncertainties and could differ from expectations.
The statement was dated October 15, 2026, in a press release distributed by APO Group on behalf of Western Union Holdings, Inc.
