Thomson Reuters expands CoCounsel Legal with Multinational Profile for cross-border research

Thomson Reuters says it has launched a next-generation update to its CoCounsel Legal platform designed to support cross-border legal research inside a single workflow.

In an announcement dated October 15, 2026, the company said the new Multinational Profile will bring legal content from more than 100 countries and territories into the CoCounsel Legal workflow. Thomson Reuters described the capability as intended to help legal teams research cross-border legal and compliance questions without leaving the platform.

A single workflow for multinational research

Thomson Reuters said that before the Multinational Profile, researching cross-border questions could require users to leave CoCounsel Legal to find, evaluate, and reconcile information across multiple jurisdictions, with what it characterized as no guarantee that the sources met professional standards.

The company said the Multinational Profile changes that approach by integrating cross-border legal research into one workflow. It said legal teams can research requirements across countries, compare differences, identify issues that may require local advice, and trace findings back to underlying sources.

Thomson Reuters said the capability draws on its legal content and what it described as vetted official legal and regulatory sources, and that responses are designed for review, verification, and action by legal professionals.

Next-generation CoCounsel Legal to roll out globally

The company also said the next generation of CoCounsel Legal is available now in the United Kingdom. It said general availability is expected globally in countries including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates by the end of October 2026.

Thomson Reuters stated that customers in the U.S., Europe, the UK, Canada, and Australia will get the Multinational Profile throughout October. It also said the upgraded platform will be available to customers in more than 90 countries and territories throughout 2026.

Capabilities cited for the platform upgrade

Thomson Reuters listed several features associated with the next-generation CoCounsel Legal platform, including:

  • Market-leading research, combining AI with content from Westlaw and Practical Law to produce legal research reports.

  • Workspaces to create matter-specific environments that combine documents, precedents, and institutional knowledge, with context preserved across tasks and matters.

  • Tabular analysis enabling bulk document review and simultaneous questioning, with results provided in a filterable table and references linked to source materials for validation.

  • Integrations with document management systems and productivity tools, with availability varying by country.

The company said not every capability is available in every geography and that availability is expected to expand.

Company and customer comments

Thomson Reuters quoted David Wong, Chief Product Officer, saying, in part, that “the professional standard now travels with the work, wherever the matter takes it.”

The company also quoted Steve Savage, Partner and CTO & Head of Development at Gosschalks, saying the next generation of CoCounsel Legal is a leap forward in functionality and quality of output, based on the authority of Westlaw and Practical Law, and that beta experience showed the difference.

Thomson Reuters did not provide independent verification of performance claims in the text supplied.

Availability and scope

According to the announcement, the Multinational Profile is expected to be rolled out across multiple regions during October 2026, with broader global general availability targeted by the end of the same month.

The announcement references the platform’s use by legal professionals, but it does not include any separate legal or regulatory outcomes tied to the release.
